Leonor Dely

In the Latin music world, some of the greatest emerging talents have come from Colombia, among them budding superstar Leonor Dely. Dely attracted the attention of veteran music producer KC Porter, three-time Grammy-winner known for his production work with Carlos Santana, Ricky Martin, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Boyz II Menu, and many others. "Her music has some of the most powerful rhythmic diversity I've ever heard, and the words she has put to music are breathtakingly inspiring," Porter said. "She's a mix between Cesaria Evora and The Buena Vista Social Club with incredible spiritual depth." Her first album "Amame", produced in 2001 by KC Porter's Insignia Records, was highly praised by critics: "A solid mix of African and Afro-Latin American folk rhythms and music. It may be one of Porter's finest recordings," (Enrique Lopetegui, Los Angeles Times). A seasoned musician, Leonor sings, composes, and plays Colombian stringed instruments. For the past 15 years she has been lead vocalist of Millero Congo, an Afro-Caribbean acoustic fusion group founded by her husband, Istvan Dely, a Hungarian- born, Cuban- and West African-trained jazz percussionist living in Colombia, and their sons David and Shangó. Millero Congo trained several generations of young Colombian musicians, and was a major factor in the recovery, revaluation and modern revival of African traditions in the folk music of Colombia. Shangó Dely, Istvan's virtuoso drummer disciple, is percussionist for Grammy winner Colombian superstar Carlos Vives' La Provincia band. Istvan and his musical family uphold the African tradition of the magical transcendence and spiritual nature of music, its social, communal function, its sacredness and moral responsibility, within the context of a contemporary spirituality for a global society.
