Nikan Bergsmo

The soprano Nikan Bergsmo is a somewhat unusal Swede, with multicultural origins, a Norwegian husband and residence in the Hague, the Netherlands. Her interpretation of Nordic music conveys a distinct aesthetical quality, shaped by a childhood in a musical home with a mother who was an opera singer, the cultural heritage of her mother's Persian Bahá'í family, and her own insights into the musical tradition of many countries. Her musical ideal is the pure, unaffected song.

Nikan Bergsmo's music education includes the Music Conservatory in Pitea in Sweden and the diploma study in classical singing at the Music Conservatory in Prague in the Czech Republic. Later she studied privately in Zurich in Switzerland and at the Royal Music Conservatory in The Hague. She has given concerts in different European countries and performed several times on radio and television. During the later 1990s, she concentrated on a lieder repertoire, drawing on both classical and contemporary compositions. In this connection she has worked with the Norwegian composer Professor Lasse Thoresen.
